My great uncle was the grand patriarch of a large family. Throughout his years he consistently encouraged us to “move forward”, meaning keep growing, keep learning, keep improving. In one way or another, I believe we all have a reason and obligation to move forward. In fact, everywhere I look I see reasons to move forward.
My ever-constant personal challenge is to relentlessly improve as a husband, father, and business professional. In nearly every situation there is an opportunity to be more patient, to ask questions and listen-to-understand rather than listen-to-respond, to encourage, teach, mentor and willingly accept the same in return. I tackle this personal endeavor by reading relevant books and consciously building onto on-going conversations that can carry on for months sometimes years. It’s very much a marathon, not a sprint. The current book I’m reading is titled “How to Raise an Adult” by Julie Lythcott-Haims.
Professionally, I’m proud to be part of a company that insatiably strives to move forward. While “good enough” may be a practical necessity in the short term, it is unacceptable to maintain the status quo when “Great” is possible. Territorial-Landworks will always be able to complete our services and interact with clients, team members, and business partners more efficiently and more effectively. As our Chief Financial Officer, I oversee an excellent staff who are constantly working on improving our financial reporting to be more user-friendly, our budgeting process to be more open and collaborative, and our invoicing process to better serve our Clients and Project Managers. As our Flathead Valley Branch Manager, we are moving forward with serving more communities, now including Flathead County, Lake County, Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, and Polson. These markets allow for new learning opportunities on how to meet the requirements of these communities while meeting our Client’s goals for their projects. Finally, as a Project Manager, we are working to improve our Quality Control program specifically directed towards MDEQ applications with a goal of 90% approval on first submittals in an industry that currently achieves 1% approval on first submittals.
In our fast-paced, ever-changing world, we will all find our meaningful way to move our communities, lives, and families forward. Although the path we choose may be our own, we all have a responsibility to contribute, volunteer, and influence our surroundings as positively as possible. It is ultimately our job to make our communities and world a better place.
What will you do today to move forward?
