As awareness increases of the effect we have on our environment, it becomes more imperative for us to employ smart and safe practices. As a result, we must evaluate the effect all phases of development will have on our environment. A properly designed and maintained wastewater system is vital for a healthy environment. If improperly treated wastewater is released into the surroundings, nitrate levels in the groundwater are affected, lowering drinking water quality. Also, contamination of surrounding surface water can affect fish populations and jeopardize the health of rivers and streams.
TLI has experience with all levels of wastewater treatment. Staff designed individual conventional systems utilizing septic tanks and drain fields, Level 2 Treatment Systems capable of reducing nitrate levels in the effluent by more than 50%, and more innovative treatment systems capable of nitrate reductions over 75%. TLI is the design engineer for a subsidiary company, Northwest Water Systems, which designs a state-of-the-art Sequencing Batch Reactor capable of treating effluent to nitrate levels below 7.5 ppm. Technology such as this can be installed in areas with very poor existing groundwater conditions and will actually improve the aquifer properties.
